EMDR: An Accelerated Highway to Healing

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)  engages the brain’s natural ability to solve problems, adapt to circumstances, let go of what is no longer needed, and feel more confident and peaceful.  When someone is asleep and dreaming, the brain is at work: it is consolidating information, resolving problems  & planning for the future.  EMDR taps into this same system to rapidly process what you are struggling with.  Your brain already has the capacity to do this—we are just helping it along.

What might take someone months to years to come to peace with through other therapies, EMDR can achieve in 5-20 sessions. It’s like taking the express train through healing, rather than the slower walking trail. EMDR is a holistic therapeutic method; it addresses your negative beliefs, disturbing sensations, images, and emotions–all the parts of you that are affected by a fear or memory.

EMDR is conducted in an 8 Phase Model;

  1. History: Understanding your current lifestyle, support system, background and health

  2. Preparation: Educating you about the Model and addressing any of your questions

  3. Assessment:  Selecting the memory(ies) or fears along with the beliefs, emotions, body sensations and level of disturbance associated

  4. Desensitization: The processing of the memory and associated beliefs, emotions, body sensations

  5. Installation:  Associating a new belief related to the memory or experience

  6. Body Scan: Attending to any remaining sensory memories and enhancing new positive sensations

  7. Closure:  Discussion of the process, how to care for yourself following a session

  8. Re-Evaluation: Over time, it is important to re-assess each memory or target we address—If we need to do additional work, we will

FAQS

What others have wondered about EMDR therapy

  • No. You will be awake and alert throughout the process. You will be speaking with me and be aware of both what you are processing from your past, and also aware of what is presently occurring in the room where we are.

  • We can effectively engage in EMDR either in person or on video/telehealth.

  • There are 8 phases to EMDR treatment (see above with “what to expect”) . The actual reprocessing will take place once we have gone through other phases. It is most important for us to first establish trust in our therapeutic relationship.
