Feeling Trapped in Time?

Weeks, months or years ago, something happened to you that has left you feeling trapped in the past. It may come up only when you are around certain people, places or smells. Or it may plague you every day. You are not alone. Many people struggle to move forward after a scary or traumatic experience.

You might notice that you…

  • Are always on alert for danger

  • Experience images or body sensations from the past

  • Breathe shallowly

  • Startle easily

  • Have difficulty concentrating

  • Often feel dread, fear or anger

  • Feel numb or frozen

  • Have headaches and muscle tension

As life continues, you may find you struggle to connect with others, cannot intimately respond to your spouse, avoid places you used to enjoy, are not as productive at work, and spend lots of money to on medications to help with heartburn and headaches. Intrusive thoughts disrupt everything. Even when you tell yourself that you are safe NOW, you still feel vulnerable to something happening again. And it feels like you are always protecting yourself and your loved ones.

You may be at the point of desperation.  You will try anything to make all of this go away:  Alcohol, edibles, staying insanely busy, doing risky things or causing your body pain.  All things you never thought you’d do, but you are desperate to feel relief.  Now in addition to the painful past, you have this new habit that you don’t really want.  Everything seems out of control, and you feel helpless to change any of it.

It may seem like a distant dream, but it is possible to recover from the past.
